OLF Ohio Linux Fest 2010

The Ohio Linux Festival, of OLF, is coming to an end. I've enjoyed hearing Susan Rose, Ruth Suehle, Jon "maddog" Hall, and many others speak on how Open Source Computing is useful in the medical field, in everyday life, and also highly sustainable. The festival is held in Columbus, Ohio at the Greater Convention Center annually. This is my second year attending, and hopefully just the beginning of my continued education in Linux and Open Source Computing.

Vibram's Five Fingers Day #1

The Goal: Run 1 mile in 5fingers in less than 15 mins.
Accomplished: 16 mins of intervals over 1 mile due to school children and cars getting in the path of running.

Today I went running for the first time in my Vibram Five Finger Sprints. I've owned these for almost a year. I wear them to work, to walk, and to relax. I never tried running... Until today! This is something I had been meaning to do since I convinced my boyfriend to purchase them as a holiday gift. You see, he obtained a pair last year while I was training in Virginia on consent forms, privacy issues and laws concerning my chosen profession as Psychologist. He bought them at an HTO, and wore them all the way back to the hotel which was at least 5 miles. The box instructs wearers to gradually build up to this sort of training. Needless to say his feet were a little unhappy the next day. Today I somewhat understand the experience he first had with these shoes. They are built to encourage bare foot running. The shoes are especially awesome for people with low or no arches, and are supposed to last much longer than the typical running shoes because of the simple design. I knew to expect some tightness, but my toes feel a little more than squished and I think I need to adjust the velcro holders around the ankle. Other than these minor setbacks, I feel optimistic about this running style. I have never really liked normal running shoes, and these are certainly anything but normal. In fact I am so excited about how well today went that I'm already hoping to invest in the newer style Bikila made just this year by the same company.
